When Bad is Good
Was introduced to a gentleman a little while ago who’s run his own business for over 10 years now.
As is often the case, I’m introduced as “This is Craig and he’s an accountant.”
Side note …
Years ago when I met people at meetings and they asked what I did, I used to say I was a stuntman at Movie World.
I’d always come clean after a while but it was fun to see how long I could keep the facade going.
Back to reality …
Anyway, he started talking about his business and wonderful things like statutory audits and regulations (sarcasm there) and a few other things which made it very clear to see his business was operating on a very successful level and he wasn’t really wanting for anything.
I asked about his wife and children and it was obvious he loved spending time with them when he wasn’t working.
So I asked the natural question …
“If you enjoy spending time with your family and don’t need to be involved in the business as much as you currently are, why do you do it?”
His answer was quite revealing.
‘’Mate, about a decade ago I was going through some bad shit … really bad shit … and the people I thought I’d have there to support me all disappeared. So when I got myself back on track I told myself I’d show them and build something that left them in my dust. I’m nowhere near where I want my business to be.”
He was talking very calmly but there was no mistaking the commitment he had to attaining his goal.
Which is why he was able to put-up with annoyances like audits, regulations, etc.
I enjoyed talking to him and had the pleasure of meeting his wife as well, but when I went home that night I thought more about what was driving him.
We hear about the usual suspects like “be your own boss” or “make more money” but in this case there was one thing that overrode everything else.
The one thing that’s common to seven out of ten business owners that leave others in their dust.
That thing?
I talk about it in greater depth in the book I’ll be releasing in the near future.
Along with other little-discussed tid-bits that I was privy to hearing about from some very successful and private business owners.
A book to help you … the private business owner … prosper in this new decade and rise above the herd.
