Accounting Is A Form Of Abuse
Some years ago, I was having drinks with a mate who’s a “firey” (a fireman for those of you outside Australia).
He was telling me about a typical day and as you’d expect, it was pretty interesting and hair-raising.
In comparison, when he asked me about a typical day for me I struggled to come up with anything remotely interesting.
I mean … seriously … what am I going to say.
Risked life and limb deciphering some tax legislation?
Fought the brain-atrophying effects of thinking in 6 minute increments?
There really wasn’t much comparison.
So he asked me what I’d do to liven-up a typical day in an accounting office.
This is what I told him.
I’d set the desks on fire to increase the adrenalin of everyone;
If anyone was still waning and needed a “spark” to keep them going, I’d have AC/DC stand behind them and rip into “Highway to Hell” (not a soundtrack, the actual band);
Instead of walking down the hall to reception to greet clients, I’d install a mini-trampoline and vault 7 metres and land in front of them, on one knee with arms outstretched whilst canned applause rang in everyone’s ears;
I’d crash-tackle an ATO auditor (you’d be surprised how many people want to do this).
As I suspect the above would contravene some Industrial Relations and Occupational Health & Safety regulations, I doubt I could actually implement any of these sterling ideas.
So I’ve since implemented other ways to gain greater enjoyment from what I do, whilst helping those in business.
One of these ways is to not focus solely on tax but look at how a business owner can grow his/her business.
After all, tax is merely a by-product of running a profitable business.
And business owners seem to care more about running a profitable business than some incomprehensible piece of tax legislation.
I talk about this in more detail, together with other business-building hoo-ha, in the new book I’m releasing early next year.
It’s not about tax.
It’s based on some discussions with some very successful and very private business owners.
They tell me stuff that I was, admittedly, pretty dismissive about.
Until I saw that it worked.
And that’s me with my natural “accountant-scepticism” hat on.
Focussed solely on private businesses, this book will include a prelude of what’s coming to the business environment in the near future, how to combat this and raise yourself above the herd.
