How My Growing A Beard Helps You
I’m growing a beard.
Now I’m the first to acknowledge that the connection between this and helping businesses may seem a bit tenuous.
So just go with me on this one.
But first let me set the scene.
(Ladies, you might want to give this article a miss).
What’s so special about a beard?
Pretty much nothing.
It’s just facial hair.
In fact, I don’t like growing beards.
They’re itchy, bits and pieces get caught in them and I usually end-up looking like a fuzzy, yellow tennis ball when I try to grow one.
So I usually give-up and go back to the smooth-faced, chiselled-jawed accountant you all know.
But it’s the PROCESS a guy goes through to get one that’s important.
And despite the end-result (I.e. fuzzy, yellow tennis-ball beard), there’s benefit in the journey and I’ll probably learn quite a few things.
Things like …
Persistence – there’ll be times when the temptation to give up will be overwhelming but if I hang in there, I’ll eventually achieve my goal and it will mean more to me.
Withstanding inconvenience – I know I’m going to be itchy and I’ll have to clean it constantly. But that’s an inconvenience; not a problem. Life’s full of inconveniences.
Not caring what people think – I’m growing a beard; not making a statement on Global Warming. If people think I look funny or have something against beards, not my problem.
Notice anything about these points?
They’re the same as what you need at times when running your business.
Together with a healthy dose of stubbornness and tenacity.
Now I’ll probably end-up simply shaving it off once I’ve completed this goal, but it won’t matter.
I’ll have done something I’ve never done before.
So next time you see a businessman with a beard, perhaps appreciate the part it’s played in his success.
Who would have thought a growing a beard could give such profound business learnings?
Not me that’s for sure, but there you have it.
